Content Ideation With AI: Moving Past "Give Me 10 Post Ideas"

Content Creation ·

Ask an AI tool for "10 content ideas" and you'll get 10 ideas. But without additional direction, those ideas may stay close to broad, familiar territory within the subject.

The problem isn't necessarily the tool. It's that "give me ideas" doesn't explain what kind of ideas would actually be useful to you.

Ideas Need Direction

A request for ideas with little additional information leaves many important decisions unspecified. The model has not been told who the content is for, what the content should accomplish, which part of the topic matters, or how the ideas will eventually be used.

Ideation becomes more directed when some of those decisions are supplied.

Audience. Ideas for someone encountering a subject for the first time can differ considerably from ideas intended for someone with more experience. Naming the audience helps define what would be relevant.

Purpose. Are you trying to answer a question, challenge an assumption, explain your approach, start a conversation, or introduce an offer? The purpose affects which ideas make sense.

Content territory. Instead of "content about marketing," a narrower territory such as "mistakes small-business owners can make when writing their own ad copy" gives the ideation a clearer area to explore.

Perspective. If you have a particular point of view on the subject, include it. This gives the generated ideas something more specific to reflect than a neutral overview of the topic.

Format. Ideas intended for short social videos may need a different scope from ideas intended for longer articles, newsletters or carousels. Specifying the intended format helps keep suggestions usable for the way you plan to publish them.

An Example of the Difference

Broad:

"Give me 10 content ideas for my skincare brand."

More directed:

"Give me content ideas for people who are new to using retinol and are nervous about irritation, from the perspective of a brand that emphasizes going slowly and paying attention to how their skin responds, for short-form video."

The second instruction doesn't guarantee stronger ideas. It simply gives the model a defined audience, perspective and format rather than leaving those choices unspecified.

Ideation Still Needs Your Judgment

Directed ideation still produces possibilities to evaluate, not a finished content strategy.

Some suggestions may fit your goals, experience and voice. Others may not. Selecting, combining, adapting or rejecting ideas remains part of the creative process.

AI-assisted ideation can therefore be treated as a way to explore possibilities—not as a reason to hand over the final editorial decision.
